Record-breaking trip for Cape Shark Adventures!

Today was a lovely day at sea for the Cape Shark Adventures team and clients! Our previous record for the total number of bronze whaler/copper sharks was 17 on a single trip. TODAY, we were lucky enough to have 19 bronze whaler/copper sharks visiting our boat at various times throughout our trip!ย  To make it even better, the visibility was AMAZING! We also saw penguins, a seal, and a sub-Antarctic skua.

The first confirmed evidence of orcas’ selective eating of shark liver in Australia

Did you know that it has been confirmed that Australian orcas (killer whales) are targeting great white sharks? Scientists recently confirmed that a great white shark, which was found washed up dead on a beach in Victoria in 2023 was in fact killed by killer whales for its liver. But how did they prove this? The evidence came from the wounds inflicted on the great white shark - the shark had a massive bite of approximately 50 cm in diameter near its pectoral fin. DNA swabs were taken from this wound to find out what had caused the massive [...]

Weekly update!

Hello shark-friends! It is Monday, and with this new week brings NEW chances for adventure at sea! Last week was unfortunately riddled with bad weather conditions. However, the weather cleared on Saturday, which just so happened to be WORLD OCEANS DAY, and our team was able to go to SEA! The sub-Antarctic skuas/brown skuas (๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ด) were sighted, as usual in winter, almost immediately upon leaving the harbour. They were then followed by kelp gulls (๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ด) and Hartlaub's gulls (๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ช). One of the core pillars of Cape Shark Adventures' conservation efforts lies in using social media as a powerful tool to educate the masses about sharks and dispel the negative stereotypes perpetuated by the media. The portrayal of sharks as ruthless, mindless predators has contributed to widespread fear and misunderstandings [...]

Disappearance of the Great White Sharks

For many years, Gansbaai has been internationally recognised as the โ€œGreat White Shark Capital of the Worldโ€ for its very high abundance of white sharks. However, the number of white sharks in Gansbaai and South Africa has significantly decreased over the last few years. A popular theory behind the disappearance of white sharks from Gansbaai is that they have been chased out of the area due to an increase in predation pressure by orcas. While this poses a significant threat to the white shark population in South Africa, the number of white sharks started declining in 2013, a few [...]
